Monday, May 20th

Today was our first day in the South. We landed in Louisiana and spent the afternoon in New Orleans. Everyone split up into different groups to eat lunch. My group went to a nice jazz restaurant on the corner of the street. We ordered some crawdads and for some of us it was the first time eating them. We also ordered state-resound gumbo. Others ordered po-boys and iced tea and relaxed as our day was coming to an end. We then spent an hour and a half car ride to Biloxi, Mississippi to our housing.

We all met at BWI airport at 7:00 am to take off for New Orleans. Once we landed, we made the drive in our four mini-vans to the French Quarter where we went off in separate groups and all experiences NOLA in our own way. I went with a few others to a classic New Orleans restaurant where we ate crawfish, po-boys and jumbalaya. After lunch, we made the drives to our service group headquarters where we received our orientation for the week. We finally drove to the church center where we are staying and then hung out on the beach for a few hours and went to sleep.

Bullis takes NOLA. Despite the short time spent in the Big Easy, many of us got a great taste of New Orleans. The group hit Decatur Street where there were many authentic New Orleans shops and restaurants. Every restaurant featured Po-Boys, Jumbalaya and Crawfish while every shop featured purple and gold beads with a few skeptical looking employees. At lunch, my particular group ordered various dishes like crawfish salads, oyster Po-Boys, and jumbalaya. While it was a short time, the Bullis seniors got to experience some authentic Creole food, beignets and witness the individuality of New Orleans.

New Orleans is quite a place. I didn't really know what to expect considering I'd never been West of the Mississippi River, but I had obviously seen the touristy version of the city on travel shows and in books. Flying in was pretty cool, passing over the coast and levies. Driving in was also very cool as we drove past the Superdome and right into downtown. Splitting up for lunch was easy as I new I needed to make the obligatory rounds to some of the famous eateries. Acme Oyster House was close to our parking spot so I headed that way. A long line re-routed us to Cafe Beignet were Nadia, Pete and I munched on the local doughnuts.

Once we arrived at our housing in Biloxi, Mississippi - here's the view from our rooms!
